Search in India in 2026: the numbers behind getting found

We pulled the latest official figures and our own client data into one place, so a business owner can see what search in India looks like now, and what to do about it.

Updated October 2026

India had 1,092.79 million internet subscribers at the end of March 2026. Google's AI Mode answers in English and eight Indian languages. And 7.83 crore businesses are registered as MSMEs, many of them competing for the same customers you want.

This page sets out those numbers with their sources, adds what we have measured on our clients' sites, and ends with what we think a business should do about them.

How many people can find you

TRAI counted 1,092.79 million internet subscribers in India at the end of March 2026, up from 1,028.61 million three months earlier. That is about 77 subscriptions for every 100 people: 127 per 100 in cities and 48 per 100 in villages.

Subscriptions are not people, since many people carry two SIMs, but the direction is clear. About 96% of those subscriptions are wireless, which for most people means a phone.

Search now answers in Indian languages

A customer who would never type an English search can now ask in Marathi or Telugu and get an answer that names businesses. Those answers are built from pages that rank, and Google has said its AI features need no special files or markup. The same work that ranks a page gets it into the answer.

How many businesses you compete with

India had 7.83 crore registered MSMEs between July 2020 and February 2026, counting both the Udyam portal and the Udyam Assist Platform. DPIIT had recognised 2,12,283 startups by the end of January 2026. And Clutch, one directory among many, listed 8,527 SEO firms in India in October 2026.

In a market this crowded, the businesses that win searches are rarely the biggest. They are the ones whose pages answer a specific search better than anyone else.

How fast new pages rank

Ahrefs, the SEO software company, tracked new pages and found that only 1.74% reached Google's top ten within a year. That figure covers every kind of search, including the most crowded.

Our own numbers look very different, because we choose specific searches. One client's pages for 13 Indian cities reached Google's first page a median of 7 days after they first appeared, from 0 days for Delhi to 51 for Bengaluru. The right search, answered precisely, can be won in days. Broad searches can take years. Telling the two apart is most of the job.

Page one here means the first day a page's average position, across every search it showed for over the past week, was 10 or better. One client and one niche: treat it as a real example, not a forecast.

How people search for local businesses, city by city

We checked Google's search suggestions on 10 October 2026 for five kinds of local business in seven cities: dentists, chartered accountants, interior designers, restaurants and marketing agencies. The habits differ more than most people expect.

  • Noida and Gurgaon search by sector number. "dentist in noida sector 62", "dentist in gurgaon sector 14".
  • Pune searches by neighbourhood. Wakad, Aundh, Kothrud, Viman Nagar, Kharadi and Baner all appear for dentists.
  • Mumbai asks for contact details and checks Instagram. "with contact details", "contact number" and "instagram" come up again and again.
  • Bengaluru checks Reddit. "dentist in bangalore reddit" and "interior designers in bangalore reddit" are suggested searches.
  • Hyderabad shares its suggestions with Pakistan. Hyderabad in Sindh appears for every kind of business we tried, so pages need to say Telangana and India.

Our market guides for Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad go deeper on each city.

What we would do with these numbers

  • Build for phones first. With about 96% of subscriptions wireless, your pages are read on small screens. One-tap contact, fast pages and short paragraphs matter more than a desktop layout.
  • Pick searches you can win. Specific searches, with a service, an area or a need in them, can move in days or weeks. Broad ones take years.
  • Say where you are, precisely. Sector, neighbourhood, city, state and country, written the way people type them.
  • Make your facts match everywhere. AI answers in any language are built from the same pages. One clear, consistent description of your business is what they quote.
  • Read your own data. Search Console shows what people actually typed to find you, from which country and on which device. It is free, and it is Google's own.
